Week Fourteen

  1. What did you do this past week?
Last week I didn’t do much for this class or any other class really. I’d hoped to start studying over the break, but I think taking an all out break from schoolwork did me well. It’s good to take a mental break every once in awhile.

Week Thirteen

  1. What did you do this past week?
This past week we finished up the IDB project by adding a site-wide search bar to the splash page. I think ours looks really good! Kudos to Alan and Seth on our team for making it so nice. Check it out at boilerpl8.me!

  2. What’s in your way?
Not too much honestly. This upcoming week is a pretty chill one because it’s Thanksgiving break (yay!), so I won’t be doing much school work if I can help it. It’s surprising that the end of the semester is right around the corner. I suppose I should start studying for the final for this class during the break cause I know that the week right after Thanksgiving is going to be really hectic.

  3. What will you do next week?
Catch up on sleep, eat turkey, and take some of the burden off of the last week of class by starting to study over the break.

My experience in class:
It turns out that we’re going to lose 20% on this phase’s grade because we forgot to submit the log for the project. It seems like a little steep of a penalty, but it is what it is. The penalty was clearly defined and we goofed.

In class we went over method overriding, which is something I’m pretty familiar with from CS314. It was interesting to learn that you can’t override private methods though. I’ll be honest and say I missed that quiz question cause I didn’t bother to check if the method was public or private. I won’t make that mistake again! We also went over more refactoring practices, which are useful to know.

Tip of the week: It might be a bit late for this semester, but here are some useful interview tips

Laugh of the week:

Week Twelve

  1. What did you do this past week?
I didn’t do much for this class last week. Ideally I would’ve worked on the next stage of the IDB project, but other homework got in the way of that.

Week Eleven

  1. What did you do this past week?
This past week my group and I finished up the second part for the IDB project. I mainly worked on building the API and filling in where needed. I enjoyed this section of the project more than the last one because I was working on things I find more interesting (backend stuff) and also because we already had the base of the website set up - it’s easier to add on features than to build something from scratch. Unfortunately, we still were met with a time crunch this project. We’re going to try to be a bit better about starting things earlier so we don’t have that stressful rush at the end. Overall I think the website is coming along nicely and I’m learning a lot from this project.

Week Ten

  1. What did you do this past week?
This past week I worked on building the RESTful API for our website. During the process I needed to turn a SQLAlchemy query into a JSON, so I looked online for other people’s solutions and found a ton. Almost all of them had some reply saying that the proposed solution didn’t work though, so I continued looking and looking. At this point it seems that all solutions are flawed in some way, so I’ll have to test out which actually works the best for what I want to do. It’s kind of crazy how many different solutions there are!

Week Nine

  1. What did you do this past week?
I survived! My team and I finished the IDB project, and my OS group and I finished project 2 for Pintos. It was a rough week for me. I spent a loooot of time in the lab, which led to a severe lack of sleep. I’ve found that the lab is most empty from about 1 - 7 am, so there’s that. As for the project itself I worked on frontend development. I didn’t have any previous experience with frontend work, so I was pretty lost for a while. I felt like a good chunk of my time was spent just tinkering around with layouts for the website that I ultimately threw out, so after hours of work I had little to show for it. I didn’t really enjoy this process, so I’m planning to do more backend oriented work for the next phases. I must say that it’s nice to be able to go to our website (boilerpl8.me) and see the work that we’ve accomplished. I look forward to building on what we’ve already done.

Week Eight

  1. What did you do this past week?
This past week I met with my group for the IDB project. We started working on the project on Sunday and ran into a variety of issues. I’m working on the front end of the project, and I must say that I’ve very quickly realized that I don’t like front-end development. It’s definitely a learning experience, but I’d rather not do it again.

Week Seven

  1. What did you do this past week?
This past week I studied for the exam and joined a group for the IDB project. I ended up spending a lot of time on making the cheat sheet, which wasn’t perhaps the best use of my time before the exam.

Week Five

  1. What did you do this past week?
This past week I finished the Netflix project! I also had my first four interviews ever for a computer science related internship, which is a big step for me! I transferred into the CS program last year, so I’m still trying to catch up and get experience before I graduate. I had my first semi-technical interview, which went pretty poorly. It was a learning experience for sure - I’ll have to prepare more for future technical interviews.

Week Three

  1. What did you do this past week?
This past week I finished the Collatz assignment. In doing so I became more familiar with GitHub, TravisCI, coverage, unittest, and testing my own code more extensively than I have for past programs. I ran into a lot of issues along the way, and I made the mistake of not starting the project early, so it was a bit of a crunch to get everything working in time.
